Overview
University of Notre Dame, Australia
Introduction:
The University of Notre Dame Australia is a Roman Catholic private university with campuses located in Fremantle and Broome in Western Australia, as well as in Sydney, New South Wales.
Additionally, the university's seven clinical schools are spread across New South Wales and Victoria.
Brief University History:
In 1945, Father Patrick Duffy, an American navy chaplain, and Cardinal Norman Thomas Gilroy, Archbishop of Sydney, explored the idea of establishing the first private Catholic university in Australia with involvement from the University of Notre Dame and the Congregation of Holy Cross.
Cardinal Gilroy believed there was a demand for a Catholic university in Australia to educate an "elite Catholic laity."
Despite efforts, including property purchase in Sydney in 1948, the charter to establish the university was never obtained, leading to the project's abandonment in 1953.
In the mid-1980s, concerns arose about the training of lay teachers for Catholic schools in Western Australia, prompting discussions about a private Catholic university in the region.
Peter Tannock, William Foley (Archbishop of Perth), and Denis Horgan (a local Catholic businessman) formed a planning committee to establish a university offering diverse fields of study, including medical and nursing education.
The University of Notre Dame Australia Act 1989 was passed in the Parliament of Western Australia, leading to the university's inauguration on July 2, 1991, with classes commencing in February 1992.
The Broome campus (originally the Kimberley Centre) opened in 1994, serving the church and Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley region.
The Sydney campus was formally opened in 2006, initially enrolling 450 students.
