Overview

University of New South Wales

Introduction:

The University of New South Wales (UNSW), commonly referred to as UNSW Sydney, is a public research institution situated in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

As a founding member of the Group of Eight, a consortium of leading research universities in Australia, UNSW is renowned for its commitment to research excellence.

Brief University History:

The University of New South Wales has its origins in two institutions: the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts established in 1833 and the Sydney Technical College established in 1878.

The idea of establishment emerged during World War II when the importance of science and technology in transforming society became evident which led to the proposal to establish the Institute of Technology, which was accepted on 9 July 1946.

The university was initially named “The New South Wales University of Technology”.

Classes at the University of New South Wales began in March 1948 with an initial intake of 46 students, offering programs in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, mining engineering, and electrical engineering.

In 1958, the institution’s name was changed to the “University of New South Wales,” reflecting its evolution from a technology-focused institution to a comprehensive university.

Throughout the 1990s, the university expanded its offerings to include fine arts and established colleges in Newcastle (1951) and Wollongong (1961), which later became independent universities

In 2008, UNSW collaborated with two other universities to establish The Centre for Social Impact.

In 2012, UNSW Press celebrated its 50th anniversary and launched the UNSW Bragg Prize for Science Writing.

World ranking:

UNSW Sydney holds the 84th position in the 2024 THE World University Rankings.

UNSW's ranking has decreased compared to 2023, but it remains among the top 100 universities globally, alongside five other Australian institutions.

The decline in rankings for Australian universities is linked to factors such as Australia's isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, its reliance on revenue from international students, limited investment in research, and competition from China.

The methodology for the World University Rankings underwent significant changes this year to better account for outputs across diverse research-intensive universities worldwide.

Data influencing the distribution and country weightings of the survey, which determine one-third of the ranking, notably affected Australian universities.
