Overview
Established in 1974, Deakin University is a public university situated in Victoria, Australia. It derives its name from Alfred Deakin, the second Prime Minister of Australia. Recognized as Victoria's fourth university, it holds the distinction of being the first to emerge in regional Victoria and specialize in distance education.
Deakin University's inaugural campus took root at Waurn Ponds, where it welcomed its first cohort of students in 1977. The primary structure on this site was the historic Stonnington Mansion, a 116-year-old building.
Initially, this mansion housed the Stonnington Stables art gallery and the university's contemporary art collection. However, both have since relocated to the Deakin University Art Gallery on the Melbourne Burwood campus.
Notably, in December 2006, the three-mansion complex was sold for $33 million to a joint venture between Hamton Property Group and Industry Superannuation Property Trust.
