In 1967, The Queensland Institute of Technology, Capricornia (QITC) was discovered in Rockhampton. CIAE was later renamed as the University College of Central Queensland.
In 1994, institute's name was officially changed to Central Queensland University.

In 2011, CQ University Australia established its first Regional University partnership with the Geraldton Universities Centre (GUC) in Western Australia.

Eligibility criteria:
Eligibility criteria and academic requirements may vary as per your course.
- Diploma Courses: Applicants must have successfully completed Australian Year 12 or equivalent. Alternatively, must have completed QF Certificate IV or equivalent.
- Undergraduate Courses: To meet the entry requirement, applicants must have successfully completed Australian Year 12. Alternatively, completion of approved university foundation studies or a formal Australian Certificate IV can also fulfill this requirement.
- Postgraduate Courses: In order to be eligible, applicants are required to have obtained a bachelor's degree from a recognized higher education institution, with an average equivalent to an Australian pass grade in the final two terms.
- Special Postgraduate Entry: A minimum of three years of work experience in a managerial role, along with an equivalent of an Australian undergraduate degree, is required.
An alternative way to be eligible for the masters courses are through successful completion of a graduate certificate in Business Administration or a graduate diploma in Business Administration. To gain admission to these graduate certificates, you can either combine a diploma with two years of relevant work experience or have five years of relevant work experience.
