In 1997, The Forum was unveiled, becoming the largest gymnasium in the vicinity. Initially, team sports like Rugby were dominant, with the Vice-Chancellor and senior staff regularly attending matches in University colors. However, by the mid-1990s, a transition occurred, with students prioritizing individual fitness routines.

The 2004 fire incident at the Shortland Union building is now viewed as a pivotal moment, signaling broader changes in student life and anticipating further transformations to come.
