Graduate Diploma of Public Health
Central Queensland University
Bruce Highway NORTH ROCKHAMPTON Queensland 4701
Overview
The Graduate Diploma of Public Health is an integral component of CQUniversity's array of Public Health programs. It extends the application of a social-ecological model of health to public health education, which is closely aligned with contemporary trends and challenges in the field, enabling innovative interventions for societal transformation. Unlike traditional Public Health courses that predominantly focus on the medical model of health, our Graduate Diploma of Public Health incorporates a broader social perspective, encompassing skills, knowledge, and practice relevant to public health.
Distinguished by its comprehensive content, the Graduate Diploma delves deeper than the Graduate Certificate in Public Health, offering a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach, allowing students to combine public health studies with another field of interest.
This progressive course delves into the origins and development of public health, emphasizing community-based and community-led approaches. Anchored in the social-ecological model of health, it introduces students to complex adaptive systems thinking and its implications for public health practice.
Embracing contemporary trends, the course explores fundamental concepts such as social and environmental determinants of health, social epidemiology, social justice, partnership development, and participatory research. Students are encouraged to apply these concepts in practical settings, employing both strengths-based and disease prevention approaches.
The program also offers a choice of two electives from a curated selection of non-public health units, enabling students to complement their public health expertise with knowledge from other fields. This fosters multi- and trans-disciplinary connections, enhancing the breadth and depth of students' understanding and practice in public health.
