Course Structure

COURSE STRUCTURE:
The program consists of eight core units alongside a major in either Biotechnology, Clinical Physiology, Nutrition, or Pathology.

For those pursuing a major in Biotechnology, Clinical Physiology, or Nutrition, an additional selection of two minors from a prescribed list outlined in the Majors and Minors section is required.

Students opting for the Pathology major will undertake 16 pathology units without the inclusion of minors.

Alternatively, students may choose the Biotechnology major and complement it with a Diagnostic Pathology co-major. Upon completion, this combination leads to the award of Bachelor of Medical Science (Biotechnology and Diagnostic Pathology). Additionally, students have the opportunity to transition into the accredited four-year CL10 Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Honours) degree.

Career Outcomes

Graduates from CQUniversity's Bachelor of Medical Science program possess the necessary expertise and competencies to pursue careers in various health sectors, including pathology, clinical measurement, biotechnology, and nutrition.

In the pathology specialization, students are equipped for roles in diagnostic medical laboratories, where they conduct analyses of human blood, urine, and tissue samples, encompassing haematological, biochemical, microbiological, and histological techniques.

The clinical measurement track prepares students for positions as clinical measurement scientists, offering comprehensive training in diagnostic physiological measurement across cardiac sciences, respiratory sciences, neurophysiology, and sleep science.

For those interested in nutrition, the program focuses on careers in health promotion and the food and nutrition industries, laying a foundation for further studies in health education, research, and public health.

In the biotechnology specialization, students are primed for careers in medical research or the biotechnology sector, with a focus on state-of-the-art technologies in therapeutics development and application, positioning them for roles in the biopharmaceutical industry or medical research laboratories.

Each specialization incorporates work-integrated learning units to enhance graduates' readiness for the workforce.

Please note that the Bachelor of Medical Sciences (Pathology) program will no longer be accredited by the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS) after December 31, 2019. The program is being phased out, with closure expected in 2020. Students aspiring to become Medical Laboratory Scientists should consider applying for the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Honours) degree, which is seeking AIMS accreditation.
