The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree requires you to undertake a substantial piece of independent and original research under academic supervision. The research thesis is examined externally by scholars with international standing in the research field of the thesis topic.

Course Structure

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is an internationally recognised research masters degree of the University.

The degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) signifies that the holder has undertaken a substantial piece of original research, which has been conducted and reported by the holder under proper academic supervision and in a research environment for a prescribed period. It is designed for students to develop advanced skills in carrying out independent and sustained research. The thesis should demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in the area of research. It is written succinctly, in English, unless approval has been given for the thesis to be written in a language other than English .

The MPhil:

  • Is undertaken for up to 1.5-2 years (full-time equivalent) or up to 4 years (part-time)
  • Preparation of a thesis of 40,000–50,000 words, under supervision, on a topic approved by Melbourne Law School.
  • Pathway to the PhD.

Academic

Minimum qualifications Applicants are normally required to have completed at least a four-year honours degree at H2A standard from an Australian university, or a qualification or combination

Entry Requirement

IELTS (academic English Only): Overall 7.0 (with written 7.0 and no band less than 6.0)
TOEFL Internet-based test: 94 + ; Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13;
Pearson Test of English Academic: 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50
Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill
