Why study the Bachelor of Biomedical Science with UNE?
Respond to changing technology and breakthroughs in understanding human diseases, with UNE's Bachelor of Biomedical Science. You'll gain an understanding of the human body's molecular and physiological mechanisms and knowledge of how diseases manifest in the body to take with you on your chosen career path.
At UNE, our small class sizes and hands-on approach set us apart. Our friendly academic staff have years of real-world experience and are committed to ensuring that you are equipped with not only up-to-date knowledge and extensive specialised practical skills, but also the tools to enable you to pursue lifelong learning and thrive and in the rapidly-changing world of biomedical science.
Build on an excellent foundation in biomedical science and open doors for further postgraduate study, by pursuing a research honours year in the Bachelor of Science with Honours or undertake a Master of Science. You are eligible to apply for admission to candidature for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with sufficient grades from either of these courses.
What makes our course different?
Our approach is multidisciplinary, with an emphasis on the associations between structure and function in human biology and health, and the clinical application of knowledge into practice. Our Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree will provide you with an excellent foundation in the field, enabling you to take the next steps to securing your career in this thriving industry. You will have the opportunity to:
- Tailor your degree to match your strengths, interests and career plans. You have the freedom to choose the direction you want to take with a range of listed units. Choose to focus on a specific area of the biomedical sciences, or broaden your scope by exploring units in neuroanatomy, neurobiology, human nutrition and metabolism, and medical chemistry.
- Benefit from specialist minors (pathways) in areas such as medical pathology, biomedical research, neuroscience and disability practice which not only provide you with a more tailored education, but also enhance your employability and provide you with a clear direction for your future. Designed in consultation with industry stakeholders, our specialist minors include a capstone unit taken at or near the end of your degree, allowing you to holistically demonstrate your newfound knowledge and skills.
- Immerse yourself in on-campus intensives (mandatory for some units) that allow you to engage with our friendly academic staff and your peers in an interactive, collaborative learning environment. Practical laboratory learning provides you with hands-on experience in a range of disciplines including anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology and molecular and cellular biology.
- Undertake a work-integrated learning unit to enhance your skills and knowledge of biomedical science in the workplace.
Study flexibly — we are one of a handful of Australian universities that offers a Bachelor of Biomedical Science online, allowing you to balance study with your existing personal and professional commitments. Please be aware that some of your units do have mandatory on-campus intensive schools to ensure you develop the range of laboratory skills necessary to succeed as a biomedical scientist.
If you do not have the recommended scientific knowledge of HSC Chemistry or Mathematics for direct entry into our Bachelor of Biomedical Science, you may be able to enrol in UNE's Bachelor of Scientific Studies and then transfer after successfully completing four units.
We are proud to be a leading industry provider of online learning in biomedical science. Year after year, students consistently award UNE the maximum 5-stars rating for Overall Experience and Student Support in The Good Universities Guide.
