Whether you want to start your journalism career or update your professional skills to work across all media platforms, Deakin's Graduate Diploma of Journalism is for you. Positioned as a top quality, contemporary program of study, the course integrates journalism theory and practice to enable you to learn how to take advantage of new opportunities in the media and communication industries.
You will be taught by experienced journalists with expertise across all key media platforms: print, television, radio and digital media. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to research, write, edit and publish news and feature stories, and work in Deakin's state-of-the-art digital newsroom and broadcast facilities.
When you graduate, you will have a portfolio of work which showcases your knowledge and skills as a journalist and expert communicator. On completion of the course, you can also take the opportunity to deepen your journalism expertise by seeking credit towards study in Deakin's Master of Communication.
The Graduate Diploma of Journalism will build and enhance the professional skills you need to meet head on the opportunities and challenges of the contemporary news and media industries.

Course Structure
To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma of Journalism, students must successfully complete 6 credit points from the units listed below and 2 credit points of electives.
Electives may be chosen from the remaining units below or from any other postgraduate course in the School of Communication and Creative Arts; students who intend to move from the diploma into the Master of Communication are strongly advised to take
- Communication Concepts ACX701
- Communication Concepts for their two elective credit points.
- Students must also complete:
- Academic Integrity AAI018
- Academic Integrity (0-credit-point compulsory unit)

Whether you want to work in newspapers, online, radio and television, specialist publishing or corporate communications, the Graduate Diploma of Journalism will provide you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to craft engaging and important news stories.
Graduates are likely to find work across a wide range of industry sectors with entertainment and content production companies (including news and other media organisations), multimedia businesses, government departments, and not-for-profit organisations. Graduates may be employed or work on a freelance basis. Roles may include news reporter, mobile journalist, producer, editor, sub-editor, blogger, copywriter, corporate communicator or media advisor.
