Overview

Rapid advances in genomics in the last decade are expected to bring about benefits and challenges in health care.  These advances require a workforce able to incorporate new ways of thinking about, and applying genomics knowledge in clinical practice and policy.

The Master of Genomics and Health provides advanced training in the current and potential impact on health and medicine brought about by advances in genomics and related technologies.

The Master of Genomics and Health is a 200 point nested award with exit points at the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma level.

Designed for a broad audience, the graduate programs in Genomics and Health will prepare you for a future within a wide range of genomics related careers.

Relevant to medical and allied health professionals who wish to upskill in the area of genomics and medicine. Or recent undergraduates in science and biomedicine who want to broaden their careers beyond the laboratory.  It will also be relevant to those with a health or science background who seek careers in clinical trials, education, community-based organisations such as genetic support groups, government or those seeking an entry point into a graduate research degree.

The University of Melbourne has long been at the forefront of delivering genetics education. The Master of Genomics and Health is the first course of its kind to be offered in Australia.

The program adopts a blended learning approach, utilising both self-paced online learning, and face-to-face tutorials and workshops that allows you to apply your knowledge in a problem-based learning environment.

Taught by research and education leaders in genomics

Led by research and education leaders within the Melbourne Children's Campus, incorporating expertise from the Royal Children's Hospital, the Murdoch Children's Institute for Research and The University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics.

Pathway to a PhD

As a Masters student you will be assisted with organising relevant internships and research projects. Successful completion of the research stream will satisfy the 25 point research pathway to PhD admission.

Course Structure

If you work in a clinical, health, education, public health, research or laboratory science related field this course will provide an opportunity to upskill your genomics knowledge to an advanced level.  It will also provide recent graduates an opportunity to gain skills for employment in genomics-related industries.

The 200 point Master will introduce you to human genetics and its function in clinical and research practice. It will teach you the complexity of the human genome, and tools to access information and inform risk assessment for patient care. You will learn the principles of ethical and legal frameworks as applied in the context of genomics in healthcare practice, as well as communication and research skills.

Internship and research opportunities

You will tailor these foundational studies with your choice of electives from a wide range of academic discipline areas to suit your individual interests and study preferences.  As a Masters student you will have the opportunity to broaden your career opportunities through your choice of internships and research projects with industry leaders and our research networks.

Flexibility in study pathways

The Master of Genomics and Health requires completion of a total of 200 points of study and allows flexibility in subject choices to suit individual interests and study preferences.

You have the option of enrolling in a Master degree (200 points) or one of the nested awards - Graduate Diploma (100 points), Graduate Certificate (50 points).

IELTS (academic English Only): Overall 7.0 (with written 7.0 and no band less than 6.0)
TOEFL Internet-based test: 94 + ; Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13;
Pearson Test of English Academic: 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50
Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill
