Who is the course for?
This course is designed for ready-qualified teachers wishing to add English as an Additional Language (EAL) as a specialised area. It’s for teachers looking to deepen their current skills and equip them with the principles and approaches to teaching TESOL – including curriculum design and evaluation. If you’re interested in completing the full Master of TESOL with us, graduates of the Graduate Certificate in TESOL will be eligible to apply for entry to the Master of TESOL with 50 credit points of advanced standing for the ‘EAL Teaching’ specialisation.

Course Structure
In the Graduate Certificate in TESOL, you’ll learn to analyse and gain understanding of the nature and form of language as a system. Over the course of your studies, you will also develop insight in how to critically evaluate and explain implications of acquiring a second language for learning and teaching. The course provides those brand-new to TESOL the ability to evaluate contemporary education issues in the field, allowing graduates to confidently contribute to local, national and global issues in TESOL education.
Study structure
The Graduate Certificate in TESOL is comprised of both supported teacher placement and face-to face learning. Entry points to the course are in both semester 1 and 2, designed to suit most schedules. For flexibility around professional or family commitments, we also offer the Graduate Certificate in TESOL on a part-time (1 year) or full-time (6 months) basis.

HOW WILL I STUDY?
The delivery mode of our course is face-to-face classes on the Parkville campus, plus supported teacher placement in primary, secondary or adult education environments. The English as an additional language teaching specialisation also requires 22 days of supervised placement at a school or similar setting during school hours.
Career Outcomes
Graduates with Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration will be eligible to apply for EAL positions within Victorian schools. You'll finish the course with the ability to critique and manage language curricular and resources which are culturally and linguistically appropriate. In the wider education field, you’ll be able to promote social justice, employability, career awareness, wellbeing and citizenship through educational policy and practice.
Applicants are encouraged to contact the VIT to determine eligibility if they do not already hold current registration.

Academic
A four-year degree in education (or equivalent) OR An undergraduate qualification in any discipline AND at least 100 credit points (or equivalent) of graduate study in education.

TOEFL Internet-based test: 79 + ; Writing 21; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13;
Pearson Test of English Academic: 58 + no communicative skill below 50
Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 176 + no skill below 169.
