Exercise and sports science explores human movement and how it applies to physical activity. Advances in research and technology related to sports and exercise are constantly revealing new ways to optimise human performance, fitness and health. UNE’s Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science will help you to maintain your on-the-pulse professionalism in this dynamic industry.

SportUNE at UNE is one of the best university sporting precincts in Australia. We offer variety, flexibility and a range of new facilities and services. Our facilities include a state-of-the-art fitness and strength building gym, a new 25-metre pool, 6-lane indoor heated pool, indoor and outdoor courts, a climbing and bouldering wall and 15 hectares of playing fields.

You will have opportunities to:

  • Tailor your studies to your career objectives by choosing from a wide range of listed elective units. For example, select units such as Understanding and Changing Human Behaviour to pursue a hands-on coaching or training career, or choose units in business and sports physiology to open opportunities in sports-based businesses.
  • Hone your analytical, technical and professional skills in the areas of movement analysis, health and fitness assessment and exercise training for health and performance.
  • Put your skills into action by completing 140 hours of practical experience as part of your course.
  • Qualify as an Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) by completing the coursework and practicum placement. Through accreditation you will be recognised for your expertise in the design and implementation of exercise interventions to prevent disease and improve human performance and wellbeing.
  • Work with a clinical placement officer who will help you identify suitable practicum sites and supervisors to ensure your practicum placement complies with ESSA accreditation requirements.
  • Study on campus or online, giving you the flexibility to balance your studies with your other commitments.
  • Transfer to the four-year Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology on completion of 20 units including 12 core units with a Credit grade point average.
  • Progress to the Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science with Honours or the research-based Master of Science if you achieve an above-average academic record in your course.
  • Graduate with a Diploma in Science or Advanced Diploma in Science if you choose not to complete the Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science at a stage where you fulfil the requirements of either of those courses.

We offer flexible entry pathways to allow you to advance your career as an Accredited Exercise Scientist.

If you have a strong interest in this area and some experience, but it has been a while since you studied, you may be able to enter this course via the Bachelor of Scientific Studies.

Course Structure

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 144 credit points with not more than 60 credit points at 100-level and at least 42 credit points at 300-level, including 140 hours of practicum experience.

Career Outcomes

This course allows you to qualify as an Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) and add value in a variety of exercise and sports science jobs.

Your career options could include:

  • cardiac, respiratory or sleep technician in hospitals
  • coach or development officer with an institute of sport, sporting team or association
  • strength and conditioning specialist working with athletes and sporting teams
  • health consultant or educator in schools or government
  • corporate health consultant in industrial/mining, employee wellbeing or employment screening
  • consultant in aged care facilities.

Academic

For direct admission into undergraduate courses offered by UNE you must have completed an educational qualification considered to be at least equivalent to completion of Year 12 in Australia.

Entry Requirement

An IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 6.0 with no sub-band less than 5.5; or equivalent TOEFL score of at least 213 in the computer-based test; or at least 79 in the internet-based test with no less than 22 in the written component; or a PTE Academic minimum overall score of 57 with no skill less than 50;
